Event Description:
Called “another order of performer” by Ben Ratliff of the NY Times, Jose “Pepito” Gomez has taken New York by storm. Jose Gomez is best known as the one of the founders, composers and lead singers of the top band “Cesar Pedroso y Los Que Son Son.” Winner of the prestigious Cuba Disco award for best male singer in Cuba, Jose Gomez is guaranteed to astonish on Friday, May 1st at SOBs.
Jose Gomez has certainly come a long way from his small town in Cuba, recently turning people away at a 5000 person club in Italy where he was playing with the band “Pupy y los que Son Son.” Mr. Gomez has a deep understanding of Cuban music, as he began his illustrious career with Maravilla de Florida, a band with over 50 years of musical history. This was just the beginning of his collaboration with Latin music greats. Mr. Gomez has gone on to perform with Habana Ensemble, Cesar “Pupy” Pedroso, Gilberto Santarosa, Cheo Feliciano and Grammy nominated Gonzalo Grau.
Mr. Gomez’s striking voice causes a stir wherever he goes – it is both beautiful and strong with a timbre that is rarely found. Ben Ratliff remarked: “For about five minutes he improvised in his thundering, needling high voice, finally settling on a narrow pitch area, starting every torrent with “oye!,” making the band members look at one another in astonishment and play harder.” Jose “Pepito” Gomez’s performance on May 1st is sure to be a truly remarkable performance that should not be missed.
