Event Description:
Spanish Cinema Now is one of the Walter Reade Theater’s longest-running series, first presented in October 1992. Since then, annual film production in Spain has moved from about 40 movies per year into the triple digits.
Audiences in Spain are not only growing, they are considerably younger nowadays, while the links between Spanish and Latin American cinema are stronger than ever. Latin American actors, directors and technicians are enriching the Spanish industry and co-productions are at an all-time high.
All the while, contemporary Spanish directors have led the way in exploring new approaches to traditional film genres, powerfully illustrated by this year’s selections for Spanish Cinema Now. Works such as Before the Fall and Timecrimes offer a distinctive brand of science fiction that favors suggestion and speculation over the special effects that have come to dominate the genre elsewhere. [Rec] is a proud, if offbeat, addition to the tradition of Spanish horror films, prominent since the ’70s. Superb examples of Spain’s socially engaged cinema are also on display in works such as My Father’s House, Everyone’s Invited and Night Flowers.
Finally, this year, the series spotlights one of Spain’s most talented actors, Javier Cámara, in seven unforgettable films, past—like Almodóvar’s Talk to Her—and present, including our Opening Night feature, Chef’s Special.
