Event Description:

The Havana Film Festival New York will celebrate its 10th anniversary from April 16th to April 23rd, 2009 in various locations throughout New York City. This year’s selection appeals to different age groups, fostering an appreciation of Latin American culture.

The annual Havana Film Festival New York (HFFNY) is an internationally renowned film event introducing its audience to prominent and emerging cinema visionaries by showcasing classics and premiering award-winning movies from and about Latin America and the U.S. Latino community. HFFNY also stimulates audience/artist dialogue by offering panel discussions, workshops, and Q&A sessions with international filmmakers, actors and producers.

The N.Y. premiere of Horn of Plenty (Best screenplay and Third Coral in Festival del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano, Havana) by Cuban director Juan Carlos Tabío, will open the festival on Thursday April 16 at the Directors Guild Theatre. Filmgoers from the metropolitan area will have the opportunity to see more than 40 films from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. This year, HFFNY will pay tribute to Cuban master, Santiago Alvarez (Hanoi, Now, LBJ, 79 Primaveras). The festival will also honor the work of award-winning Colombian filmmaker Luis Ospina (The Paper Tiger, The Supreme Uneasiness, Pura Sangre, Vampires of Poverty).

HFFNY is collaborating with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies (Hunter College), Bronx Museum of the Arts, Queens Theatre in the Park and, King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center (NYU) to offer free and low-cost events celebrating Latin American and Latino culture.
