Juanes Dominates Latin GRAMMY Awards with 5 Trophies

Colombian rocker Juanes swept the the ninth annual Latin Grammy Award, winning all five of the awards for which he was nominated to add to the 12 he already has, for Album, Record and Song of the Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Album, and Best Short Video, for his album La Vida … Es Un Ratico and its lead single, “Me Enamora.” Juanes also set a new record for total wins, bringing his total Latin Grammy trophies to 17 — breaking Alejandro Sanz’s mark of 14.
Groundbreaking Mexican rockers Cafe Tacuba, whose deliriously inventive Sino garnered them six nominations, took home prizes for Best Alternative Song and Best Rock Song. Newcomer Kany Garcia was one of the night’s few surprises, winning for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Album for her debut CD, Cualquier Dia.
The show opened with Juanes and American star John Legend, on piano, performing Juanes’ Odio por Amor (Hate for Love), a power-pop ballad pleading for positive change, with Legend singing in Spanish, before moving on to If You Are Out There, a song they recently recorded for Legend’s new album.
Gloria Estefan, who was honored as Latin Recording Person of the Year, performed her hits, Mi Tierra and Oye Mi Canto, with legendary guitarists Jose Feliciano and Carlos Santana. Estefan also won awards for Best Traditional Tropical Album and Best Tropical Song.
