Who’s Hot at the Grammy Awards?

It’s almost that time of year, again ~ the Grammy Awards are coming up in February, and this year promises to be caliente! Some of Latin America’s most popular artists have been nominated for awards. Here’s a sneak peak at who may be chosen as el mejor of 2008.
Notable Latin artists nominated this year include Juanes, with LaVida Es..Un Ratico (Life is a Moment) for Best Latin Pop Album. Juanes has won 17 Latin Grammy Awards to date, more than any other artist.
Also up for Best Latin Pop Album is Puerto Rican artist Luis Fonsi, with Palabras Del Silencio, Fonsi’s seventh album, which was released on August 26, 2008.
Puerto Rican reggaeton artists Wisin y Yandel are nominated for Best Latin Urban Album with Los Extraterrestres. They are the first rappers to receive a nomination to the Billboard Awards, and all of their albums have gone gold.
Luis Miguel is one of the most popular singers in Latin America, and has been since the early 1980s. He is often referred to as El Sol de México (The Sun of Mexico). He is nominated for Best Latin Pop Album for Complices.
Jaguares is a Mexican rock en Español band, and has been nominated in the category of Best Latin Rock Or Alternative Album for their sixth album, titled “45.”
Also worth mentioning is the duo Rkm & Ken-y, formerly known as Rakim. Rkm provides the rapping music for the group, while Ken-y writes the song lyrics. They are nominated for Best Latin Urban Album for The Royalty: La Realeza (Machete Music).
DLG (Dark Latin Groove) is a Salsa band that mixes salsa, hip-hop, reggaeton, and reggae with amazing results. They are nominated for Best Tropical Latin Album for Renacer.
Overlooked for the Grammy Awards this year is Cafe Tacuba, the Mexican rock group that received the most nominations for Sino. An intentional descuido (oversight?)
The 51st Annual Grammy Awards will be held on February 8, 2009 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It will once again be televised on CBS. Latin Grammy Awards are given out based on votes by artist and technician peers in the recording industry, rather than based on album sales as most other Grammy’s are awarded.
